The dwelling’s northern façade still reflects its original 1859 composition, though much of its current detailing was added in 1915 and is reflective of the Arts and Crafts Movement popular during that period. Major features on this façade include curvilinear brackets supported by a gabled green tile canopy over the entrance and casement windows on the first and second levels installed prior to 1915. Carl Hilmar Guenther, the house’s original owner, first arrived in Texas from Germany in 1851. He was a trained cabinet maker, stone mason, and millwright, and constructed his first mill in San Antonio in 1859. The C.H. Guenther and Sons Flour Mill, now known as Pioneer Flour Mills, was located adjacent to his homestead along the San Antonio River. The dwelling was one of only three constructed in or before 1859 within the King William neighborhood and became one of eight constructed by Guenther family members in the area during the second half of the nineteenth century (Watson et al 1990). Guenther's home was one of the first built in the King William neighborhood.

The restaurant encompasses the original kitchen, tea room, dining room and the outdoor arbor areas of the Guenther House. The Parlor’s casement windows are one-quarter-inch glazed beveled glass. Window coverings, similar to those shown in a 1902 photograph, are of “Rosini” lace imported from Germany. The mirrors are arranged to give the illusion of a never-ending reflection.

Hilmar traveled through the Midwest before embarking down the Mississippi River to Louisiana and, ultimately, Texas. He said that even if a full team was on scene they may not have been able to prevent Hunter from breaking in due to the size of the Getty House property, and the fact that it happened at a back entrance. The break in happened while Mayor Bass and her family were inside but unharmed, said Los Angeles Police Department officials. The shattered glass triggered an alarm that alerted police, who responded to the home immediately and took Hunter into custody. Gascón says that Hunter caused between $5,000 and $10,000 in damage to the home after he shattered the glass, which cut him, causing blood stains to be left behind throughout the house. The Barrett House in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles, CA, was a sprawling Norman Revival residence, with living areas mostly arrayed on one floor, designed by the noted Southern CA architects John Byers and Edla Muir. Barrett also owned a number of other properties in the region, including the Barrett Ranch near Calabasas, CA.

The dwelling’s southern façade is also dominated by the 1915 addition and features an interior chimney, an elaborate art glass door with C.H. Guenther’s initials, and a row of basement-level casement windows with art glass transoms decorated with an ivy motif. The house faces northeast along the former north bank of the San Antonio River, and its setting is dominated by the presence of the adjacent Pioneer Flour Mills Complex (Watson et al 1990; Sanborn Fire Insurance Company var.). As originally constructed, the Guenther House was a raised, modified T-plan cottage constructed from locally available materials including limestone blocks quarried from an area near modern-day Brackenridge Park and mortar containing local sand reinforced with horse hair.

It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places listings in Bexar County, Texas on October 11, 1990. The National Register of Historic Places-listed Carl Hilmar Guenther House was originally constructed in 1859, making it one of the oldest houses in the King William neighborhood. It was extensively modified in 1915, and its current appearance is characterized by alterations from that date.

Bass and her family have lived in the home since early 2023 after she was elected to the position. In 1848, a twenty-three-year-old apprentice millwright boarded Europe bound for America. His name was Carl Hilmar Guenther.Hilmar traveled through the Midwest before embarking down the Mississippi River to Louisiana and, ultimately, Texas. During this time, he was involved in a variety of work experiences including lumbering, farming and flour milling. Originally, the Parlor floors were constructed of virgin pine, a wood preferred for its hardness and pleasing pattern. During the home’s restoration, the flooring was replaced by virgin pine obtained from another structure built at the turn-of-the-century.

Stones were quarried from an area near what is now the San Antonio Zoo for a single-story residence. The mortar joining these stones was made from rocks gathered downstream. Here, Hilmar and his wife, Henrietta Dorothea Pape, set up a home and raised seven children.

Over the past century and a half, the wide-open Texas skyline has changed. But in the home, restaurant and institutional kitchens of America, you’ll find that the dedication of C.H. No more aparent than the commitment to excellence offered at the Guenther Hosue. In 1902 Erhard Guenther, Hilmar’s youngest son, became president of Pioneer Flour Mills. The changes that he made gave The Guenther House the look it has today.

Brickroom LA: Venue Booking & Event Space Rental Los Angeles

City planners are aiming to create more multifamily complexes and mixed-use buildings to increase affordability and reduce sprawl. The exact number of homes built in California by year can vary significantly and is dependent on a variety of factors such as population growth, economic conditions, and regulatory policies. However, according to the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD), an estimated number of housing units was created in California in recent years.

The American Clay Machinery Company, Freese, Fate-Root-Heath, Chambers, and Bonnot were the more popular stiff-mud machines with California brickmakers. In the Fall of 1848, Zins built his two-story brick house on a block of land given to him by Sutter, bounded by M, N, Front, and Second streets, Sacramento. While George Zins laid the bricks, his wife made the mortar and carried the hod.

Completed in early 1849, at a cost of $40,000, this was the first brick house in Sacramento. It was later known as the Bininger House, the Green Tea Hotel, the Empire Hotel, and the Pioneer Hotel. Sometime after the founding of Fort Ross in Sonoma County in 1812, the Russians discovered clay suitable for making bricks in various places near the fort. The first shipment of clay was made in 1823 from Fort Ross to New Archangel (Sitka, Alaska). In 1825, Yefim Abyshev was hired as the master brickmaker, indicating about when brickmaking at Fort Ross began, the first structure being a brick kiln. In 1831, 12,000 bricks were produced and 8,000 of those were shipped to New Archangel.

Why are houses in California made of stucco?

This economic squeeze in the brick industry took its toll by the loss of a large number brick manufacturers in the first two decades of the 1900s. Factors such as large populations, strong job markets, and a thriving businesses climate have led to an increase in demand for new buildings, which has caused an upsurge in construction projects. In addition, the increased availability of funding from public and private sources has allowed for more extensive and expensive projects. In addition to houses in Los Angeles, there were also 1576 condos, 323 townhouses, and 1153 multi-family units for sale in Los Angeles last month. Los Angeles is a moderately walkable city in Los Angeles County with a Walk Score of 69. Finally, states such as California, Texas, and Florida tend to have higher rates of new home growth than other states. This is due to their climates and land availability, as well as their strong economic systems. It can also help reduce energy costs, as it acts as an insulator, keeping a home’s interior cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Additionally, stucco comes in a variety of colors, textures and designs, allowing for homeowners to customize the look of their home. In addition, stucco requires periodic maintenance and sealing to protect it from water damage, which can be expensive and time consuming. When stucco is exposed to the elements, it is also prone to UV damage, which can result in fading and discoloration.

However, the first firebrick made in California was probably that of Andrew Steiger in 1863 at his pottery works in San Jose, and he was followed two years later by N. Good fire clay deposits were found in Alameda, Contra Costa, Placer, Amador, Calaveras, and Riverside counties. Outside of the major metropolitan areas, there is also significant growth in construction taking place in less densely populated areas, such as suburbs and rural towns. This is due to the increased availability of land and resources, as well as a growing population that is seeking more affordable and accessible housing. In total, these 10 states accounted for more than 60 percent of all housing units authorized with building permits in the US in 2019. In addition to suburban and exurban locations, homes are being constructed in urban areas as well.

Additionally, brick homes may cost more to purchase than a standard wood-frame house, but they often demand higher resale values due to their increased longevity. California did not have great paving brick manufacturers like other states mainly because of the scarcity of good vitrified clay deposits. High-quality pavers were shipped from producers outside of California, such as the Denny-Renton Company in Washington. The first paving brick in California was probably that made by the Los Angeles Pressed Brick Company in Santa Monica in 1906. Up to the 1890s, all brickyards in California were using the soft-mud method for making bricks. Both wooden molds and soft-mud machine presses were used, with the latter type increasing over time.

There are currently 3 homes for sale matching red brick in Los Angeles at a median listing price of $1.2M. Some of these homes are "Hot Homes," meaning they're likely to sell quickly. Most homes for sale in Los Angeles stay on the market for 48 days and receive 3 offers.

Exurban areas are usually even more remote, offering larger homes and lots on acreages or with more natural landscapes. Suburban and exurban homes are typically designed to accommodate larger families, often with multiple levels and amenities such as pools and outdoor spaces. In comparison, during the first half of 2021, permits for a total of 163,180 units, including 132,915 single-family units and 30,265 multi-family units, were approved. It is relatively easy to apply, cost-effective, and, when applied properly and maintained, can last for decades. Stucco is an ideal material, as it is moisture and mold-resistant, fireproof, and requires little upkeep after installation. Homes are often made with stucco because it is a durable and cost-effective option for covering and insulating exterior walls.

Soon afterwards, individuals opened brickyards wherever there was a local clay deposit and demand for buildings. Throughout the 1850s and 1860s nearly every California town boasted of building their first brick building. Brick also became in greater demand after fires reduced whole towns of wooden buildings to ashes. Philander Colton and the others of the Mormon Battalion began making bricks in March of 1847 and fired them on May 28, 1847, in Old Town San Diego. At the end of June 1847, the Mormon brickmakers built the first brick building for a courthouse, a replica constructed with modern brick of which stands today on the site at Old Town plaza.

Of those, over 100,000 were single-family housing units, while multi-family housing accounted for the remainder. Stucco is composed of cement, sand, water, and lime, which allows it to remain flexible. This allows it to stand up to extreme weather conditions and seismic activity common in warm climates. Additionally, it doesn’t require a significant amount of water, or energy, to install, which is important in warm climates where water rationing might be necessary. Beyond its durability, stucco is also an affordable siding option and is cheaper than many other materials on the market. This is great for property owners looking to make smart investments in their home, as stucco requires little to no maintenance and lasts for many years.

These bricks were used in the first brick building in Los Angeles at Main and 3rd streets. This article lists the oldest extant buildings in California, including extant buildings and structures constructed during Spanish, Mexican, and early American rule over California. Only buildings built prior to 1850 are suitable for inclusion on this list, or the building must be the oldest of its type.

A number of factors, including population growth, home affordability, and improved job prospects, have contributed to the increase in single-family home starts in recent years. Furthermore, California’s population is comprised of low-income residents, with a large portion of traditionally underserved populations. This means that public funding for housing developments is often allocated to low-cost housing rather than market rate housing. These types of buildings tend to include multiple family dwellings, such as townhouses, condos, and apartments, as well blocks of single-family homes. This allows people to live within cities while still able to enjoy the benefits of home ownership. In 2018, a total of 135,992 housing units were permitted in California, which was the highest amount seen since 2006.

Most of the larger California brick manufacturers used the Hoffman continuous kilns for their rapid and efficient firing of bricks. Some used the round down-draft permanent kilns for finer control of the burn. Most of the mid- to small-sized brickyards used the rectangular up-draft open or field kilns for firing common brick. Up to 1854, bricks were made and fired right on or near the property of the building project, provided there was enough suitable clay. Many building contractors doubled as brickmakers or hired brickmakers to supply bricks on site. This was true for many of the early brick buildings in the Mother Lode towns along Highway 49, though some bricks were shipped by wagons from Stockton and Sacramento.

In the early 1990s, he moved to Shenzhen, the sixth-most populous city in China, and started working as a designer of guidance systems, similar to what you might see at an airport, as well as on civic architecture projects. Prior to launching CIGA Design in 2012, Zhang had spent nearly 30 years working in various fields of design, with barely a passing interest in what people wore on their wrists. Often, box sets are experienced once and then stored away forever (if not lost). Perhaps this one will fare the same fate, yet, I was quite pleased with this presentation as it highlighted the brand’s effort input, not just on the watch but the product as a whole. One of the first surprising aspects of the Series Z watch by CIGA Design is the box set that accompanies the watch and which you interact with before ever laying eyes on the timepiece. It’s encouraging to see original design and high quality in homegrown Chinese watches, and more so for it to be reaching a global audience. This, along with the Ciga Blue Planet’s simply striking design and execution, makes it a watch worth taking note of — and a conversation piece should you pick one up. While I wouldn’t wear it every day, it’s certainly an object I can appreciate —and even wear from time to time.

Hands-On The CIGA Design Blue Planet Uses Terrain To Tell The Time

The modern design of the square case and round movement illustrates the traditional philosophy of heaven being round and the earth being square. Along the way, the design and mechanical complexity of CIGA Design’s watches have continued to increase while maintaining phenomenal attention to detail. First, in early 2020, CIGADesign’s Series Z campaign broke records by becoming the best-selling product on IndieGoGo within the watch category.

He was unable to attend the Grand Prix in person due to COVID-19 travel restrictions that existed at the time between China and Switzerland. In fact, I wouldn't speak with him until several months later, when reporting on a small feature on Zhang and CIGA Design that appeared in HODINKEE Magazine, Volume 10. With the help of a translator, we spoke over Zoom for about an hour, which is when I started to unpack and understand just how impactful the recognition by the GPHG has been for Zhang and his company. Activity book inspired by the behind-the-scenes work of Pixar's animators. Projects invite discoveries about color, shape, character design, and scene setting—and how all of these interact to tell a visual story.

The sapphire crystal’s curve blends perfectly into that of the rounded (Ikepod-like) and brushed case. That case is — despite its 46mm diameter — surprisingly comfortable, thanks to its lugless design, soft silicon strap and (in the case of the tested model) lightweight titanium construction. This kind of approach to creating something new, that nobody has ever done before is exactly the kind of fresh air I feel the industry needs. And since the Blue Planet is a GPHG winner, I’m apparently not alone in my thinking. I’m thrilled to see such innovation, and with the amount of attention to detail and ergonomics, the Blue Planet has, I really didn’t find any real fault.

What he promises, however, is that his watches will always remain approachable in price. The titanium Blue Planet model we photographed for this article, for example, retails for $1,099 USD, while the stainless steel option is priced at just $899 USD. I was surprised how easily the watch wore while running errands in New York – it's not like I ever forgot it was on my wrist, but it was comfortable.

This is a weird but captivating watch — one that’s chock full of talking points if nothing else. It might not be for everyone but…then again, it may be just right for you. The CIGA Design Blue Planet dial is one of, if not the most unique dial I’ve seen in a watch that costs less than $1500. And once you get used to its unique layout and how the time is displayed, it’s an incredibly fresh new way to get excited about the future of the company. More concretely, enthusiasts anticipate the launch of CIGA‘s own Swiss-made mechanical chronograph movements costing thousands anytime. Jianming confirms working prototypes are already functioning flawlessly.

CIGA Owners Overwhelmingly Recommend The Brand

Among its key requirements, this new Challenge Watch category only considers entries whose retail price is below $3,500. A total of 8 designers from 8 different countries comprise the design team, including Jianmin, who himself was named as one of the top 10 industrial designers in China in 2016. To date, the brainchildren of this experienced design team have earned 17 international design awards, including a coveted GPHG award in 2021 for their Blue Planet Watch.

Art Direction and packaging design for classical soprano Julia Bullock’s debut album, Walking In The Dark. So far, I’ve spent the most time with the silicone option as I find it fits the look of the watch the best. Nevertheless, I did put the leather strap on for a couple of the images and the watch still looked good, it’s just not my preferred option. The brand has taken care to finish the movement and dial to a very high standard. Clearly, the folks at CIGA Design understood the face of this watch was going to be admired from up close and it needed to be free of imperfections. Considering the price point, this is an even more impressive feat.

Purpose is always a good look, in my opinion, and these elements could (theoretically) also be integrated in an attractive way (using color, perhaps). I especially like that the map focuses on the Eastern hemisphere, showing pride in its origin rather than necessarily trying to cater to Western consumers. It’s interesting to see an original Chinese perspective in watches — and especially one that receives international attention, not to mention being honored by the notoriously conservative Swiss. The Ciga Blue Planet might have gotten many watch fans’ attention for those reasons, but it also deserves a closer look for its design, quality, execution and details. Another design element Ciga got right is pairing this visual centerpiece with an otherwise minimal design.

Why don't they build brick houses in California?

brick house

In addition to this, there are many smaller cities and towns in different states across the US that have seen an increase in construction activity as well. While these measures are helpful, they are not always effective, as the housing shortage persists in some of the nation’s most expensive cities. Skyrocketing rents, lack of supply, and rising housing costs are all contributing factors to the housing shortage, raising the cost of living for all income levels. Rent burdens, overcrowding, homelessness, and racial disparities in housing all persist due to the housing shortage. This lack of infrastructure has made it less attractive for developers to invest in the market leading to further limited housing availability. Since the early 2000s, there has been rapid buying and selling of properties for investment purposes, leading to an artificially inflated housing market and rising prices.

It can reduce energy costs and make homes more energy efficient, which is important for property owners in California, who often face higher energy bills due to the state’s warm climate. In regions like the Bay Area, brick is also quite common for homes built in the mid- to late-1900s. This is due to its plentiful availability and excellent structural qualities.

What state has the most building permits?

New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle all have bustling construction markets. Denver, Atlanta, Chicago, and Austin are also seeing a rapid acceleration in construction projects. The construction boom in California has also been bolstered by a number of government initiatives, such as incentives and tax credits, that have been designed to attract new businesses.

The National Low Income Housing Coalition estimates that the US is experiencing a shortage of seven million housing units for low-income renters. Finally, the lack of public infrastructure in some parts of the state has hindered the development of housing. California lacks the basic infrastructure such as water, waste management, and adequate transportation systems that are necessary to support increased construction. City planners are creating multifamily complexes and mixed-use buildings to create more affordable housing and reduce sprawl.

Finally, stucco is a challenging material to repair when damaged, as it is notoriously difficult to blend patches and repairs with the existing stucco. In addition, stucco has the ability to self-heal, which means small cracks and chips can be easily repaired, making it a low-maintenance material. As of 2021, “Brick House” remains one of the most recognizable funk songs of all time. Its infectious groove has been used in countless movies, TV shows, and commercials, cementing its place in popular culture. The song’s popularity amongst African American audiences further cemented its place as a funk classic that has stood the test of time.

In 2020, the state issued a total of 999,100 building permits, valued at $45.5 billion. This represents an 11.8% increase from 2019 and is the highest number of permits issued in California since 2000. Construction is booming across the entire state of California, but the most significant growth has been concentrated in major metropolitan areas, such as Los Angeles and San Francisco. In these cities, the construction boom is driven by high demand for both residential and commercial buildings.

In 2019, 122,684 total housing units were permitted in California – 114,053 single-family homes and the rest multi-family units. A similar pattern can be seen in 2020, in which the HCD granted permits for 106,925 total housing units – 98,914 single-family and 8,011 multi-family. In some areas of California, brick is one of the predominant building materials for residences. For example, Napa County has areas where most homes are constructed of brick.

Just within the city limits, there were 30 brickyards containing 40 brick machines and capable of producing more than 250,000 bricks per day. Harnett, Samuel Carlisle, P.B. Cornwall, F. Burke, Polk and Todd, Pettit and Queen, Fountain Brothers, and Callahan and Ryan. In addition, brick is heavier and more expensive than many other materials, so it would cost significantly more up-front to build a brick house in California. Furthermore, brick requires a lot of specialized labor for its construction, raising labor costs as well. Because a large number of firebrick were imported reportedly as ballast from countries such as England, Scotland, and Australia, there was little incentive for the local manufacture of firebrick.

During this period also we saw the closing of Remillard, San Jose, Dickey, Simons, and many other large brick plants when the use of building bricks declined in the market place. Earthquakes required changes in structural products and building codes that eliminated some companies. Increased use of reinforced concrete also had displaced bricks in the building market.

Over 56,800 bricks, and possibly as many as 100,000, were produced at Fort Ross from 1825 to 1839. According to Hulquist (1977), the Russian bricks are sand-molded and averaged 1.5 inches wider and 0.25 inch thicker than standard American brick. The need for more affordable housing is particularly acute in the nation’s largest cities. In 2019, San Francisco and Los Angeles experienced rent increases of over 5%.

Stucco is a cement-based material that is applied as a thick, paintable mixture to walls. The main problem with stucco is that it is prone to cracking or developing holes due to water seeping in from the outside. Stucco needs to have a proper moisture barrier installed before applying the stucco, since water is the enemy of stucco. Stucco is incredibly durable material, making it perfect for homes in California’s Mediterranean climate, which experiences a wide temperature range and dry air. It has a long lifespan and can easily withstand hot summers and wet winters. Houses in California are typically constructed out of stucco for a variety of reasons.

Zhang wanted to create a product where the design was directly connected to a person's individuality and sense of self. After a few years of experimentation, he started working on watches, and in 2012, he established CIGA (an acronym for China International Great Art) Design. I wasn't able to meet Zhang Jianmin, the 55-year-old founder of CIGA Design, that night in Geneva.

The brand also includes a black fabric strap for more rugged use. Both straps use hardware in bare stainless steel, leading to a slightly contrasting look with the case. For starters, and most obviously, there is a domed motif of Earth in the center of the dial. The globe itself is curved, and about 26mm across, making it a significant portion of the dial make-up. On top of the blue sphere is an aluminum impression of parts of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East with a small compass used as the hour hand (More on that in a second). The aluminum impression is incredibly well done, and I’d even compare it to some of the big brands and their motif’s.

CIGA Design Mechanical Watch Series X Gorilla has a standout cyberpunk, futurist design - Gadget Flow

CIGA Design Mechanical Watch Series X Gorilla has a standout cyberpunk, futurist design.

Inspired by a muscular gorilla, this season's new offering features modern mechanical aesthetics to highlight the gorilla's multi-layered connotations of power and inner wisdom. An independent spring suspension system has been added to the four corners of the watch to make the product more resilient. Conveying the pursuit of freedom, this superb product will empower modern youth with resilience, braveness, and power, as well as encourage them to chase whatever they love. CD and LP packaging design for Timothy B. Schmit's latest solo album, Leap of Faith. Brand identity, illustration, packaging design and signage for independent maker of gourmet granola. Art direction and design of Hunter S. Thompson's visual biography featuring personal photography, ephemera and selected writings.

This Small Brand Makes Heirloom-Quality Watches that Cost Less Than a Seiko

These extend the skeletonized theme encountered on the dial into the case itself. The Series Z being a sporty watch, I chose to go with the silicone strap first. It took just a couple of seconds to attach it to the case as each of the straps has small metal “tabs” on the backside that completely mitigate the need for strap-changing tools. For a price of over $1,000, depending on the exact model, some might feel this watch is comparatively expensive considering its Chinese origin — but that notion is feeling increasingly outmoded. I’d say it feels reasonable, if not like a strong value, given all it delivers.

Hands-On The Aquascaphe Titanium Is Baltic's Most Modern Watch Yet

CIGA Design is an upcoming Chinese watch brand that has made waves with a record-breaking Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign as well as an award at the 2021 GPHG awards ceremony. In the following review, I’ll be taking a look at the Series Z watch, which is the subject of the former. Work with our award-winning creative services studio and advertising agency to bring your brand or product story to life. You want to look closely at details like this — and when you do (such as with a loupe or macro lens) you find that they’re not sloppily rendered.

Ciga Design Blue Planet U Series

The three-dimensional globe motif at the center of the Ciga Blue Planet might suggest a world timer or GMT, but this is a functionally simple watch. It displays only the hours and the minutes — but it does so with discs instead of hands. Imagine everyone’s surprise in 2021, when Chinese brand CIGA Design was announced the winner of the Challenge Watch category of GPHG - The first-ever Chinese watch company to win. In CIGA‘s case, critical feedback centers largely on quirks of their avant garde case shapes. For example, some owners with slimmer wrists find certain models wear a bit loose even fully clamped down.

They did this by amassing sales of more than $2.5 million for a single watch model. Time scale is hidden and assimilate it perfectly into the watch case. While hidding the unnecessary number element CIGA Design keeps the time scale on the case instead of inside the dial which simplified the whole design but keep everything completed. The independently developed X Series movement CD-01 and gorilla-inspired cyberpunk-style square case enclose four triangles to form the most physically stable structure, and highlight its unique beauty while ensuring stable movement. The watch, packaging and all materials in the packaging must be returned in good condition and unused.

SMOG has designed 15 titles in this series over the last 12 years. Although the case dimensions may seem bulky, CIGA Design keeps the Series X Gorilla impressively wearable thanks to a variety of factors. It may be a cliché in fashion circles, but it genuinely is true that black coloration makes things appear smaller. Furthermore, while the case width may be on the larger side, the overall thickness is a manageable 11.8mm, which combined with the stepped case profile allows for a surprisingly flat stance on the wrist. The extremely short squared-off lugs also play a large role in wearability here, preventing overhang on the vast majority of wrists.

Mike’s Cigars offers the absolute best and biggest selection of cigars, humidors, lighters, ashtrays, cutters, and smoking accessories. Whether you’re a beginner starting your cigar journey, are an occasional smoker looking for a nice celebratory cigar, or a knowledgeable aficionado trying to find a luxury or rare cigar, our online cigar store has something for everyone. We take on liability, auto, and workers’ compensation claims after an insurance company is placed in liquidation.

CIGA Design teamed up with Sea-Gull Movements, a Tianjin-based movement manufacturer. So technically speaking, the Blue Planet movement is self-designed and I wouldn’t fault anyone for calling it “In House” to some extent. It’s actually really important that the strap be comfortable considering the size and shape of the case, and I’m happy to report that it is extremely soft, and well-made. It doesn’t pull hair, or as I would have expected, fall off to the side of your wrist. With the lack of lugs and the drastic curvature of the case, I would have expected this watch to be difficult to strap down comfortably, but it was not - And I was pleasantly surprised. "I am more than impressed by CIGA Design’s Series U watch…the deep blue color of the engraved earth against the silvery face looks sharp and has fantastic visual texture."

But until the 2021 ceremony virtually no one in the Swiss watchmaking establishment thought of the Chinese as competitors — as the industry’s stunned reaction to CIGA Design’s win underscored. CIGA Design’s triumph at an industry awards event last fall was unexpected. All the watches you need to know about, delivered to your inbox daily. Swiss watchmaking is so governed by tradition that it can be nearly impossible for a newcomer to break through, especially one that isn't from a traditional watchmaking hub.
